WHAT IS MOISSANITE?

MOISSANITE

While we use a wide range of stones in our rings, we will admit that we have a soft spot for moissanite. If you are considering moissanite for your design, read on to discover its unparalleled value, lifetime brilliance and budget-friendly prices.

What is moissanite?

Moissanite is chemically and compositionally different than a diamond, even though it shares a lot of optical similarities. They actually have a higher refractive index than diamonds do (more sparkle). The other difference is the hardness (MOHS scale). Diamonds are a 10 and Moissanite is a 9.5-9.25 and the scale is exponential, like earthquakes. They are incredibly hard and never change color or lose their sparkle. They are also completely conflict-free and eco-friendly.

Looks

While there are countless factors that go into selecting the perfect stone, appearance is at the top of most shoppers’ lists. Before, being socially and environmentally responsible came at a price: dull, lackluster stones. Luckily, that is no longer the case. Moissanite has superior brilliance and an extraordinary refractive index, so sparkle is never compromised. It’s very difficult to distinguish between a real diamond and moissanite with the naked eye — actually, moissanite actually outperforms diamonds visually, giving you extra sparkle at a fraction of the price. We custom-cut all of our own stones, so you are in full control. If you can dream it, we can cut it and use it in a piece that is 100% uniquely you.

Composition

Although Moissanite is just starting to gain popularity, it was discovered in 1893 by French chemist Henri Moissan, who encountered the stones in a meteor crater. Due to the rarity of these craters, chemists in a lab worked to recreate the spectacular stone found there, and luckily for us, succeeded. Moissanite is not a fake diamond, but its own stunning stone. On the MOHS scale, Moissanite is a 9.25-9.5, with 10 being the highest (diamonds are a 10).

Cost

The incredible affordability of Moissanite is what allows us to craft the ring of your dreams at a price that you can afford. Moissanite runs at about $500-$700 per carat (our prices are $200-$375 per carat) while the cost of diamonds is exponential. This means that a 5 carat diamond won’t just be five times the cost of a 1 carat diamond. In general, they run $5,000+ per carat.

Color

Moissanites come in a huge spectrum of colors. They go from completely colorless (our “Modern White” DEF-Color), off-white (our “Vintage White” GHI-Color), canary (all shades), champagne, orange, green, blue, gray and black.

Social and Environmental Responsibility

Not only are Moissanites stunningly beautiful, but they are also socially and environmentally responsible. This means that A) no people were harmed in the creation of your Moissanite stone, and B) they can be gently mined, unlike the dangerous and invasive processes used to mine diamonds. When you choose Moissanite, the earth is better off for it.

Sparkle

Moissanites outperform diamonds visually in flashes of color. This means more stunning sparkle, and that’s never a bad thing.
